Can your DNA help determine your perfect combo of diet and exercise?

I’m about to find out.  In December {2016}, I purchased a DNA kit from 23andme.com…this year I got an invitation to participate in a DNA weight loss study.

In December {2016}, I purchased a DNA kit from 23andme.com.  It was so interesting to find out about what makes me…me.  I received reports about my geographic ancestry, how many Neanderthal genes I have, how athletic I am and a few non worrisome hereditary health risks.  I also received a prediction of my body mass based on my genes, and a report telling me whether I have an inborn tendency to be heavier or thinner.  Lucky me, I have a genetic tendency to be heavier.

Recently, the team at 23andme sent me an email asking if I would like to participate in a first-of-its-kind weight loss research study that will engage with customers to learn more about genetic variants associated with weight loss, and the effectiveness of using different diets or exercise to lose weight.

Participants can opt to take part in the project by sticking to one of two diets or an exercise plan for three months, reporting back on whether their waistlines grew or shrank.  Sounds easy enough, and I’m intrigued.

This study may prove to be the most comprehensive attempt yet to discern the links between people’s genes and dieting success. 23andMe hopes what it learns will let it create predictive models that provide tailored weight loss advice as part of its consumer genetic reports.  What it may be able to figure out, is whether there are genetic or personal reasons why some individuals will end up losing 40 pounds, and others gaining 10, no matter which advice they follow.  Interesting right?!

So with more than a few pounds to lose, I’m in.  I begin on Jan 8, 2017.  I purchased the perfect Mini Journal from Amazon.com to help me keep track of all the details of my journey.  The cover of my mini fitness journal says “Your Future Looks Bright!” Of course I will share all my updates with you here as I progress over the next 12 weeks.

Why fitness journals are awesome.

Why did I buy a journal?  Because I love them!  Why should you buy a fitness journal?  Because, keeping a fitness journal means you can plan ahead to achieve your goals.  You can look back to see what’s working and what’s not, and have a clear idea of what you’re going to do today. It takes the guesswork out and maximizes the results of everything you do.  When you keep a fitness journal everything you do has a purpose.
