23andme Weight Loss Study | Week One

Joining the weight loss intervention study was as simple as getting an email asking if I was obese or had extra pounds to lose. It came on a day, like many before it, that I felt frustrated with the weight I’ve recently gained and couldn’t handle feeling fat anymore.

If memory serves me, I was once told by a primary care physician that being fat is bad, because it puts too much strain on your organs. The summation of his argument: If you are fat you are in poor health. That is final.

Curious about genetics role, I wanted to ask him about my grandparents, who were obese in later times in their lives…but lived long lives without any of the co-morbidities associated with obesity. But I couldn’t find the words. Of course they had aches, pains and other health issues, but what 80-plus-year-old chain smoker doesn’t? He wouldn’t have had time for my anecdotal evidence anyway.

For whatever reason, maybe boredom, or maybe an inner desire to be a fitness-know-it-all, or maybe I truly just love to participate in every-single-new-fitness-trend-out-there.  I’m on board this one too.

Step one

I received my diet plan summary via email with instructions to do my best to follow it for 12 weeks, starting today.  It’s actually very simple and appears well planned out.  The approach focuses on reducing carbohydrates in your diet, eating healthy fats and proteins, and staying physically active.  Writing this post, I’m at the end of day one and oddly enough… I can already tell its working.  Mainly because, I’m hungry. lol  If you want any of the diet plan details…just ask me in the comment section.

I’m still waiting for the exercise plan.  Not like I need it tho, I am a certified personal trainer after all.  Although, I will follow it for the sake of the study. I do love to see other workout plans {even if I know I could write a better one}.  I imagine my future self reading it and saying “you call that a workout?”  Geez, so defensive today…what is wrong with me?

You name that fitness craze; I participated in it, tried it and can tell you all about it.  From Nutri-System to Weight Watchers to Jenny Craig – I went to that meeting.  Exercise, you ask?  Step aerobics, Thigh Master, Trampoline Class, Zumba, Body by Jake, Kick-boxing, Tae-Bo, Cross-fit, Bodybuilding, Personal Training, Hot Yoga – I’ve tried them all and more.  I guess its way more than just a hobby, because I could go on and on.  I should stop writing now.

OMG don’t get me started on all the supplements and products I’ve tried!
