Dear Past Me,

An exercise in self-reflection:  An effort to continually improve yourself by learning from your past.  It’s a healthy, beneficial and necessary component of both change and personal growth.  Dear Past Me

Dear Past Me,

There is a practice you may have heard of…where you write yourself a letter to 3 versions of yourself:  Your past self, present self and future self.

So, I’ve decided to humor you with a letter to yours truly…my past self.

blog dearme

Dear Me (Ten years ago…) ,

Wherever you go, no matter what the weather, always bring your own sunshine.

The beautiful thing about sunshine is that it spreads. Light is very difficult to contain, very difficult to cover. So, you keep shining that sunshine of yours, and at least our world will be a brighter place.

You’re time is valuable.  Stop wasting it.

Specifically – time lost to fear, self-doubt, and some questionable decision-making at a key junctures.

We’ll never be royals (royals).

But everybody’s like Cristal*, Maybach, diamonds on your timepiece.  Jet planes, islands, tigers on a gold leash.  We don’t care…we aren’t caught up in your love affair…And we’ll never be royals (royals) – Lorde

Let It Go.

There I stand.  In the light of day.  Let the storm rage on.  The cold never bothered me anyway. – Disney’s Frozen

Stay confident, you are doing better than you think.

Lettin’ em know we’re going to stand our ground.  So lift your hands up higher and wave em’ proud.  Take a deep breath and say it loud.  Never can, never will, can’t hold us down. – Cristina Aguilera

Be strong, stay strong and understand the definition of strength.

Strength is the capacity to break a Hershey bar into four pieces with your bare hands…and then eat just one of the pieces.

Eat like you give a damn.   Food is FUEL for your body.

Oh how I wished I’d learned this lesson even earlier!!! You want your body to be able to perform when you put demands on it.  But that won’t happen if you skip breakfast or go under the misguided assumption that skipping meals or eating less will make my body use my fat stores for fuel (it doesn’t quite work that way).

When you fuel your body with healthy foods, your body will use those foods to build muscle, repair cells, maintain optimal health AND provide you with much-needed ENERGY!

Stop apologizing.  Sorry, not sorry.  Everything is going to be ok…and you’ve got time. 🙂

So there you have it.  Although not so much like a letter (it turned out more like a to-do list with lyrics & quotes)…I actually feel much better having completed it.

Can you relate?

Would you ever attempt this exercise?  Would you share it?

If you wrote a letter to your past self, what would you say?
