News flash: Achieving any goal requires willpower.

The good news is that willpower can be strengthened. It’s just a matter of listening to the little angel sitting on your shoulder, instead of succumbing to the little devil sitting on the other shoulder.  In this article you’ll discover 2 new ways to do this.

devil may care

Imagine the Angel and Devil on your shoulders on a typical day, just like in a cheesy commercial. Does any of this sound familiar?

Angel: You need to workout at the gym today.

Devil: No, instead, I think you need to get some tea with cake, relax, and catch up on last weeks episode of Mr. Selfridge…

You:  Hmmmmm??

Temptation is everywhere. Did you know, we only posses a finite amount of willpower in a day?  So don’t run out of it!  If you’re feeling depleted, the devils offer sounds wonderful. How do you maintain the willpower to overcome?

use words

1.  Use alternative phrasing.  Give your willpower a boost.  Use alternative phrasing and lower the barriers that wear down your willpower so you will have more strength to devote to your goal.

Phrase it this way:

Angel:  Today is my gym workout, I’m excited!

Devil:  Yes! Fun!

You:  Yippee! Everyone wins!

Why?! The Devil can’t possibly chime in after that hearing that statement. Because, the devil never says NO to fun.

FACT: The Devil loves fun…so phrase it that way!

It’s fun!  It’s not an obligation, boring commitment or arduous task… its fun! Practice this often enough, a funny thing happens, you might actually begin to convince yourself its fun (reference: last weeks article about habits).

all work

FACT: All excuses and no willpower makes Jack a plump boy.

2.  Take it one day at a time.  Focus on today.  Don’t worry about tomorrow, if you have trouble controlling yourself today.  Focus on the moment.

So there you have it.

When does your willpower run out?  Afternoon or Nighttime?

When was the biggest test of your willpower?
