Have you heard the expressions “Eat Information” or “Emotional Eating”? Our food isn’t just about what we eat. It’s about how we feel about ourselves & how we take care of our mind.  Food a many splendored thing.

When people come to fitness, they carry their own ideas about what food is…even if they’ve never actually thought about it before.

For them, food can be…

  • fuel
  • reward
  • punishment
  • escape
  • shame
  • freedom
  • relief

Food is a lot of things.  It’s a story that shapes your daily life, your health and your function. However, if you strip away the emotions from food then you might see food as merely information.

It’s not always easy, but I try to view food as information, there is no “good” food or “bad” food.  There are only choices.  And that’s it.

But choice IS the key.

Just like choosing to exercise or remain sedentary.  I’m always surprised when people tell me that they “are now paleo” , “only eat raw”, “considering detoxing”, “currently fasting”, or “eliminating some item”.  It’s oddly fascinating, like this photo.

Of course this doesn’t mean that healthful eating isn’t important.  My point, you don’t need diet buzzwords, raw food, only liquids or other crazy fad diets.

Cutting down on sugar is always a good idea.  Cutting down on processed foods is always a good choice. Being correctly hydrated is always a good choice.

Folks, it’s ok, food doesn’t need to be all-or-nothing.  For some odd reason this Taylor Swift song comes to my mind (I’ve adjusted the lyrics 😉 ).  Feel free to sing along…

Everytime you choose to eat one thing over another, you’re voting for whats really important to you right now.  Of course, if you didn’t read this post, you may not realize you’re doing that.  Lucky for you.

But every decision IS a calculation, of what really matters to you in that moment. When it comes to food, try to leave some of the emotion out of it, choose wisely and be mindful.  Food is a many splendored thing, food is information.

So there you have it.
