My body is its own unique canvas. I am the artist; nutrition is my paint and my workouts are the paintbrush. ~ Anonymous
I love this analogy/quote. Just like artists we mold ourselves with our choices. The choices we make today, create the person we are tomorrow. Would you agree?
When I say we are all artists I mean anyone who is changing – creating molding themselves – whether it be eating healthy – or consistent workouts – or both – or neither. It’s all a big game of construction using some canvas – some paint – some brushes.
Synonymous with: you, some nutrition and some exercise.
Motivated by the infamous “Muffin-Top Incident”, I have improved the ways in which I paint. The colors are cleaner and there is more energy in my brush work. I find myself energized and motivated envisioning my new masterpiece on the horizon. I feel so compelled, it actually feels like a disservice for me not to tell you these things.
My Own Michelangelo
Outside of the obvious, I could write for days and days on all the reasons why this simple analogy is so important but here are the main reasons I tell my clients to focus on painting themselves in “The Picture of Health”.
Paint: Along my personal path, and in witnessing the paths of my clients, I’ve seen time and time again that eating food that loves you back (ie. nutritious, in the correct amount) is crucial.
- What kind of painting do you get if your paint is low quality or artificial?
- What kind of painting comes out of using too much paint?
- What kind of painting comes out of using too little paint?
- What happens when you use your best paint in the perfect amount? Ta-da!
Paintbrushes: Ok, you’re eating the best quality food in the perfect amount. I’ve seen time and time again that working out (ie. persistently and consistently) is the next critical step.
- What kind of painting do you get if you use a poor quality paintbrush?
- What kind of painting do you get if your paintbrush is too big or small?
- What kind of painting do you get if you use the wrong paintbrush?
- What kind of painting do you get when you forget your paintbrush?
- What happens when you use your best paintbrush? Voila!
I say to you: Open up your mind; Focus as you paint; paint in-abstract if you will, but paint! You may paint with all the skill in the world; you may stroke forward with incredible deftness and curve backward with divine grace, and yet if you’re not master of your paintbrushes as well as your paint, I would say—and here Fate steps in—that you will fail.
Canvas, paint and brushes go hand in hand. Just like-you, nutrition and exercise. You cannot create a beautiful masterpiece without all 3.
So there you have it.
