Stairs Workout

Hello friends,

It’s that time of year again! The sun is starting to shine…and its shedding light on the dust in my house. Spring cleaning season is almost here, and as much as I want to get outside and admire the springtime splendor…I need to get some spring cleaning done inside and I need sneak in a workout too!

I spent a lot of the day dashing up and down the stairs trying to get all of my housework done before the season finale of Downton Abbey.  That got me thinking…running the stairs is great exercise, why not take it up a notch and get in a quick workout?

As if climbing the stairs more than a dozen times isn’t enough of a challenge, I created a way to step it up.  Say you have a flight of stairs in your two-story house. You probably walk up and down them several times a day. Am I right?! Next time you are taking the stairs, ‘Stop At The Top’ and do a set of exercises.  You could do this workout anytime {not just while spring cleaning, like me}, doing this 3-4 times a day is a super simple way of increasing your fitness.

Stairs Workout

Heres what I came up with.  Basically, I sprinted up the stairs 4 times, and alternated 15 squats,15 incline push ups, 15 dips and 15 calf raises.

Important tips

  • Don’t Fall.
  • If you have problematic knees, keep in mind that walking down stairs is harder on the knees than up. Take the stairs sideways (walk turned to the side) on the down, and the pressure is transferred off the patella (knee cap).
  • Speed is not essential – Please always pay attention to your heart rate, breathing and foot placement. Take it slow, but stay steady and make sure to rest between sets.
  • If balance or falling is your concern, there’s no reason why you cannot hold on to the railing (especially walking downstairs).  As long as you continue climbing you will still get the benefit. Use the railing for stability but whenever you feel confident (especially on the upstairs), go without holding on.

I think I had about a dozen chores between upstairs and down, so it was quite the workout by the time I was done!

Plus, I got a solid head start on spring cleaning the house…maybe this year I will finish before Spring gets here!

So there you have it.

Do you love to throw open the windows on the first warm spring day?

Do you regularly do at-home workouts, gym or both?
